Capitol, Holocaust, and Archives

Today we went to the Capitol building where we watched  the congress vote. Then we went to the Museum of American History were we looked at American stories and First Lady dresses. After that we went to the Holocaust Museum were we had to go through 4 floors seeing how it started to how it ended. We also met 2 Holocaust survivors. After than we went to the National Archives and saw the Declaration and Constitution. -Tessa Lewis-

The Holocaust Museum

Today in the Holocaust Museum the pictures of the Jews were really sad and graphic. Seeing this makes us realize how bad it was back then. Seeing how they had it then made us realize how good we actually have it.  Seeing what they wore in the camps was sad. Seeing all the shoes and hair, then finding out that it was only a small fraction of them, made us realize how many people were affected. -Carissa&&Lori

As you read a name -you see a face

You look at the wall of names and as you read a name, you see a face...your face. this is symbolic as you read the names of the fallen you see the faces of the living. We must remember the fallen while we are still here because someday we might become a just another name on the wall...The Holocaust Museum was a powerful experience. You walk in and see the faces of all who died. You see pictures of the weak and dying. You are able to see the shoes of some of those who were killed. And a picture of some of the hair.... It was a very moving Museum and i would hope to see it again sometime.

How Lucky We Are

Today we went to the Holocaust Museum.  We saw lots of movie bits and lots of writing pieces and pictures.  the most interesting thing for me was the room of pictures.  The walls were extremely tall and they were covered with pictures.  My favorite thing was probably the pictures that kids drew during the holocaust. Some drew what they were experiencing and others just drew for fun.  Seeing this museum has made me even more sad than when we studied it at school.  It has made me realize how lucky we are now.  Kayla Tennefoss

Went By Too Fast

Today we went to the Holocaust Museum we got to read about everything. there so much to learn about it even more then what we have been told. its amazing. They showed films of things that happen during the  holocaust. They had so many crazy things that I couldn't imagine having had seen it all. It was my favorite thing to go to. but this whole trip has ben a blast and went by too fast! - Harlie Whitworth

And So Ends the Trip

We went to the Holocaust Museum and saw some very sad things. We just finished "shopping". We have chosen a very scenic sequence of places to observe. We have just finished at the National Archives building. It was quite interesting, except for the crowded areas. They were dreadful. And so ends the story of the DC trip for the eighth grade class of 2016. Yet, next years the class will remember  their trip to DC.  - Isaiah Menuez.

Bill of Rights in Dim Light

We went to Holocaust Museum and learnt a lot. seen a lot of sad things like how the nazis would cut up the jews and also experiment on them.We went to the National Archive and seen a lot of important documents. My favorite was the Bill of Rights. I liked everything though. I thought it was really cool that the lights had to be dimmed down to keep the documents in good condition. - Kane Drouhard

The Holocaust Museum

I was looking forward to visiting the Holocaust Museum.  I did some research in the 7th grade about the Holocaust and I really like the subject.  Some of the stuff in the Museum was so tragic.  It was interesting to learn many new things I did not know. - Dustin Smith

The Last Day

This morning we went to the house, then we when to the American History Museum. then we went to the holocaust museum. then we went to Fords Theater and also shopping. Then we went the the National Archives.. now we are going to the boat and we will have dinner on there! Then we will go to the White House after the boat. And then we will drive home.  - Chloe  McPhern

Awesome Day

This morning we went to the Capitol building. We got to go into the Congress room and watch the representatives speak and vote on amendments. The Congress room was awesome because we got to see what they really do and what happens. After that we took a picture of the whole class in front of the Capitol. While we were taking the picture our representative Jim Renacci stopped and talked to us. He was really nice.

In the afternoon we went to the Holocaust Museum. I liked this because it showed us so much more than we ever learned at home in school. It was so tragic. I thought today was great and horrific to see all of the things that the Nazis did to the Jews just because they didn't like them. I learned that Denmark was the only country to try to save their Jewish citizens. Denmark was able to save 90% of their Jewish citizens.

After the Holocaust Museum we went to the National Archives and looked at the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It was so amazing to see these documents that are over 200 years old. Aaron Spidell

Gettysburg's Battlefield

Gettysburg  battlefield was interesting…the battle field didn't have a lot of cover and it was rocky. The term high ground, you would think its a lot Cemetery  Ridge and little round top. it was interesting to see the high ground at Cemetery   Ridge, it wasn't much higher then the rest of the battle field such as where Picketts charge took place. in DC i was looking mostly forward to seeing the reflection pool but since it is under construction,i guess I'll have to come back someday.

Grateful For What We Have

Today we went to the Holocaust Museum and saw what happened there at the concentration camps. They had gathered Jews from different countries. Jews were forced to work and starve. Some died of diseases. Some died of starvation. Others tried to escape. If you were not successful you were killed. We should be glad we're not in this right now. Seeing this makes you feel grateful for what you have, even if its less than others have. Ethan Willis

First Ladys' Dresses

Saw my ancestor Mamie Eisenhower's dress at the first ladies exhibit at the American History Museum! Today we went to the The House of Representatives! And watched them vote. Then we went to the American History Museum and ate lunch! Next we went to the Holocaust Museum, that was really interesting! Then we went to Fords Theater and went shopping on that road. Then we went to the National Archives and saw the Constitution! And now we are on our way to the boat!!! Yayyy! :)

Holocaust Museum

Today was the Holocaust Museum. I cannot describe who horrific the picture were even in black and white. Tears welded up in my eyes as I saw how deceitful Hitler was to the people that were persecuted. It was amazing and there are no words to describe how true it was. The USA barely even helped! I could not believe it but it was true. A lot of countries didn't even know it was happening at the time. I cannot imagine how horrible it would be if it were to happen again but if it does the changes the world has made will hopefully help us like the law against genocide and the fact that different nations WILL take refugees into their country. I could never imagine what those people must have felt but we all have to come together to make sure this genocide NEVER happens again. ~Katherine Yoder

PS Omg! I saw the real Declaration and Constitution!   love them

Voting in the House

Today was  a very good day. First we went to the House of Representatives and watched a vote take place. Honestly it made everybody fall asleep including me. But then we went to the the American Museum of History and then the Holocaust Museum. The Holocaust Museum was very touching and made you want to cry...When I saw saw the sad faces of the innocent little children I did tear up a little bit. It it a great museum that helps us remember that terrible time. We even got to meet two Holocaust survivors. Then we went to Ford's Theater and got to do some shopping. Then we went to the National Archives. Now we are on our way to the boat! I cant wait! ..........grace lemon:)

Never Again

The Holocaust was very traumatic. Not many survived the Holocaust and the people who did cannot forget the things that they saw. The Nazis where cruel to the Jews and others they captured. Nobody should have to be treated the way they where. Overall the Holocaust was a terrible thing and should have never happened or happen again. Nicole Singer

Three Great Museums

Today was a great day. We went to the Holocaust Museum and it was unlike anything I have ever seen before.  We saw all the shoes, pictures, hair, the beds, the gates and MANY more scary things. We also saw the real Declaration of Independence,  The Constitution, and Bill of Rights. It was really cool. Another great part of the day was the American History Museum. We saw all the first ladies dresses for Irrigation Day. Today I have seen and learned things I will never forget. -Kendall Lloyd

Strong Message

Today we went to the Holocaust Museum. It brings across a very strong message. It was really sad seeing all the faces of innocent people who died because of their religion. To me , the saddest parts were seeing all the shoes of the deceased and reading a plaque saying: handicapped deaths. It read that the handicapped were usually the first to die . To me, that is extremely sad knowing that those people died because of something they had no control over. Karmen Hiuntsberger

I Learned "a lot"

Today was a very educational day! We started our day off at the House of Reps., then went to The American Museum of History. There we saw some of the 1st ladys dresses they wore. Also we saw the first flag that flew at Fort McHenry. Then we went to my favorite place of the whole trip, the Holocaust Museum. It was very detailed! It taught me more about Hitler and what he put people through. It was very very sad! After that we went and saw the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution. I learn a lot and this was a great trip!:) -Ryley Poling-

Packed Day

Today we started by going to the Capitol building. We went through and everything was amazing: the statues and the Congress room. The Congress room was amazing because they were in session and the decorations were beautiful.

Next we went to the Holocaust and it was one of the things that I was looking forward to. The things that the Jews went through were terrifying and insane. They took their hair to make shirts and their teeth because they wanted the gold fillings. I learned that they cut off their hair before they were cremated.

The last thing that we saw was the Archives and it was magnificent because we saw the Declaration of Independents and the Constitution.  Markus Schlabach

Learning about the Holocaust

Today we went to the Holocaust Museum. The museum is so big, there are 4 floors dedicated to only the Holocaust. On the top floor is where it starts, it talks about the events leading up to the Holocaust, then in the next 2 levels is what happened during the Holocaust and the last level is the end result. Even though this is a very sad part of history it is interesting to learn about even though this is a very sad part of history it is interesting to learn about.  - Kirsten Troyer

Day Three for Taylor

I had a good day. I enjoyed the Holocaust Museum. I thought that I knew everything that could be known about the Holocaust but to my surpass there so much more. I didn't know they would just use little kids for there science projects. At the American History Museum i didn't get to see much because we had a really short time. I think if we would have had longer time i would have had more fun there. I would have to say that i didn't really like it.. National Archives we also didn't have a lot of time because we didn't get in fast.

Day 3

We went to the Holocaust Museum. The minute you walk in you could feel sadness and fear. The feel changed how you saw this horror happening.
-Regina Wilcox

Best Day - Three

Today was the most fun day. First we went to watch a debate at the Capitol. We also got to see a a whole police group speeding down the road. The most curious and interesting thing today was the Holocaust Museum. I think it was very informational and unusual to learn about. Then we got to shop and we all got nice cool glasses to look sharp in during the dance. Nick Strausbaugh

Three Museums Today

Today we went to 3 museums. we went to the Holocaust Museum and it was sad because of the people who died  in it. It was sad when they killed all those people that did nothing wrong. We went to the Archives to see the Declaration of  Independence and it was cool to see because of how they kept neat for many years. Finally we get on the boat  to see all the things we did not  see yet in the past 3 days.             Sirena and Ashley

Day 3

Today we went to the Holocaust Memorial Museum and it was a great experience. I saw the shoes and hair from some of the people in the concentration camps and it was a very emotional for me knowing that all those people were murdered and that was not even close to a percent of the people that died.

After that we went to the National Archives and saw the Declaration, Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Even though I couldn't read it I still knew that without those documents we may not have the life we do today. Also we went to the capitol and saw where the representatives debate. The best part of that was they were in House chamber and we saw them vote on a bill. That was a very cool thing to see - that many people never get to. Seth Green

The Holocaust Museum

I really enjoyed the Holocaust Museum.  The shoes hair and the real videos of the holocaust was really moving.  I liked walking around the city. the hotels were a lot better than i expected too. i liked the new Martin Luther King Jr. Monument.   TITUS B.

Day 3

Today we went to the Capitol building and saw a vote on a bill. the nays won and its was pretty interesting. Then we went to the Holocaust Museum and learned what the Nazis did to the Jews and others. They did horrible things and I learned that the handicapped were considered the lowest grade of human. They did all kinds of awful experiments on live humans. Trevor Garrod

Small but Historic

The day today was great. We went to the Holocaust Museum and the National Archives where we got to see the Constitution and the Magna Carta. The Archives were small and dark but was awesome with history. Now i look forward to the boat ride. Brodie Yoder.

Last Day

Today was really fun even though we had to e quiet a lot and it was kind of sad, DC is awesome. the Holocaust Museum was sad but I learned a lot. I am extremely excited to go on the boat, going be kinda cold though. -Greyden Yoder

Passing a Bill

The Holocaust Museum was very informational. The things they did to the Jews were really bad. When we went to the Capitol on the House side. I was amazed by the size of it. It was like a museum itself. It took forever to get the pictures on the steps but it was fun. It was very interesting to see how the House passes a bill.  Parker Snyder

Holocaust

Today was really interesting. The Holocaust Museum was very emotional and and sometimes sickening to think of how the Jews were treated. The pictures and settings seemed so real that I imagined what it was like in the camps. It was very very sad to see the real shoes of the Jews that were in the camps. - Brittany Penick

Legislating

Today is the last day of the trip, sadly. We went to the capitol and watched the voting for a amendment. For me it was a little boring but it was some e because it is so old. In the archives i saw the Declaration of Independence and some of us looked for the heat sensors like we saw on national treasure. Jaydon Schlabach

Star Spangled Banner

Today was a very fun interesting day. We went to the Holocaust Museum ... Which was extremely sad but i think the most exhilarating  moment was talking to two survivors and then had a very powerful story to tell. Then we stopped at the american history museum where we rode escalators which was a load of fun and saw a ton of different things!
That was exciting because I might never do that again. Then we went into one of the smithsonian museums and saw the Star Spangled Banner. That was cool!  - Patrick

Coming Back Again One Day

Today is the last day in D.C.. This has been such an amazing trip. I loved seeing all the monuments and the documents in the National Archives. Shopping today was fun also. we were kind of short on time but that was all good :) I really want to come back here one day to see this again. Everything was so cool and inspiring and I learned so much more than I knew before. Katelyn Bowman

Worth the Wait

Today in D.C. I went to the National Archives. It was a long wait. I saw the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. They are all very old documents. The long wait was definitely worth it. Derek Fields

Architecture

I really admire the sculptures. I also admire how the buildings are designed on the inside. I can't imagine how long it had to take to make a single building yet alone all the buildings in DC. The Library of Congress building was beyond amazing. (Anonymous)

Surviving the Holocaust

Today was a jammed  packed day filled with lots of learning and fun. It was very heart wrenching at the Holocaust Museum. I had the privilege of listening to  a  survivors of the Holocaust. The man was 17 and 75 pounds when he was rescued. The woman loves Americans because the American soldiers rescued her! - Melissa

Not Ready to Leave

Today we got to go see our Wayne County Congressman. He came and had his picture taken with us.  We are now going to go to the American History Museum. I can't wait to go shopping and talk to my dad to tell him everything we have been doing. I have been having so much fun. The Holocaust Museum was so sad. I really am not ready to leave. Charity Myers

Destini - last day

Today we could to see so many things that made me really think about how good we have it. When people would just kill Jews, not even caring. It was jus ta normal thing . We also walked to the Capitol building and took a picture, and boy do we look good ! We are leaving tonight and  I don't want to. - Destini

We went Holocaust Museum and we saw all sorts of stuff. I saw piles of books that the Nazis burned. I saw the pile of shoes. I saw the pictures of hair. Really hard to imagine what it was like. Then, I saw movies about the Holocaust all along the way through. Sam Farrar

Holocaust Museum

We were just at the Holocaust Museum. I thought it was interesting learning about what the Nazis did. They had many ways to torture the Jews. They could also do many experiments on the Jews. Hard to believe. Kristian Wanner

The Holocaust Museum

The Holocaust museum was really intense. You definitely  could feel the sense of uneasiness. The pain and terrible times people were forced to go through was unbearable . The exhibit showed  greatly every detail Maegan KingThe boat party was so awesome. I had a great time with all our classmates and Mrs. C and Ms. Chis:)

After Going Through the Holocaust Museum

Jack Staggs: we just finished our tour at the Holocaust museum we got these fake passports of people that went through the Holocaust and my guy was cool because he lived.  We also got these questions and my question was which artifact or picture meant the most to me towards the Holocaust and mine was this picture of a lady being rescued by a Soviet soldier. The Holocaust might be my favorite subject and museum we have been to because it's very informational and actually mind blowing.

Brenna's Third Day

Just left the Captiol Building. We saw Congress vote on a bill. One guy was taking a long time to vote, so a bunch of Congressmen started shouting, "Vote vote vote vote!" That's not something you see on T.V. We also got our picture with Jim Renacci. ~Brenna

We just came out of the Holocaust Museum. It was very interesting. When we entered, we all got a name and a story. As we went through the museum, our stories developed. In the end, we learned if our person survived. My person was named Fruma. She was Jewish, and when she heard rumors of Nazis coming she  fled. In the end, she disappeared . Her husband says she must have drowned. ~Brenna

I'm seriously going to miss D.C. We saw Ford's Theater and the house where Lincoln died. It was cool to see. We also went to street venders and got t-shirts and sweat-shirts. Now we will go party on the boat! Then we will go to the Iwo Jima monument. Then, 8 hours and we are home. I don't want to leave!

The White House was under lockdown. I have no idea why. We drove past Iwo Jima. It was really cool. We just saw a vampire on the side of the road! Hahaha! I'm sooo tired. These girls keep randomly laughing because we are sooo tired. Well the boat was fun. And we are currently exiting D.C. I'm going to miss it, but I'm tired and ready to be home. ~Brenna

Capitol

We had gallery passes for both the House and Senate. The House was in session and we heard amendments proposed by several Representatives in front of only a handful of other Representatives.

When they voted almost all the 435 Representatives came into the chamber for voting. They voted with electric key cards and their vote was electronically recorded on a board on the front wall.

We saw a lot of the people you see on the news. On the floor of the House was Rep Renacci, Rep Pelosi, and Speaker Bohner to mention a few. Some of us saw Michelle Bachman in the hall.

At the end of the voting, the Representatives started yelling. It turned out that they were razzing another member. The whole Capitol visit was pretty amazing. it certainly made what we hear about on the abstract come alive.

Today we went to Arlington Cemetery and it was great to watch the changing of the guards. I personally liked the Library  of Congress because the designs in the place were very cool and i would like to go back and look at it again sometime.  We also went to the Library of Congress and i liked it very much because of the architecture s amazing and the paintings were beautiful.  - Markus Schlabach

Tessa's Day 1 DC

Today was a very fun day! I liked seeing all of the airplanes and spaceships in the Air and Space Museum. Then at the National Cemetery  we watched Brenna, Nick, Isaiah, Michael walk out and place the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Then we went to the Library  of Congress where we got to look in and see where National Treasure used during the movie. Then we ate. The last thing we did is walk around with our glowing shirts and glow sticks looking at monuments.  -Tessa Lewis-

A Wedding at Lincoln Memorial

Today was amazing!!! we saw all the huge monuments including the Lincoln memorial and my favorite the Jefferson Memorial. We even saw a couple just married come out of the Lincoln memorial. everyone clapped and cheered for the newlyweds! We saw the aerogel in the Air and Space Museum and it really looked like allied just the air of the world was fading into the gel. The day was every hectic but very fun! tomorrow we go to the Holocaust museum. i remember Charity having  blond moment and asking if the holocaust was here in washington. ha ha! i love her! well time to get settled in to our hotel rooms and go finish journaling and finally go to bed! ~Michelle Lighty

Seth's Day in DC

I had such a great day today we went to the lincoln memorial and that was so stunning. We also went to the library of congress and that may be one of the most beautiful building i have ever had the privilege  of touring. After dinner we went to the korea memorial and saw the 19 statues. When we finished with that we went over to the Vietnam memorial and i tried to look for a man named "Robert Grey" because he took my grandfather's place in a camp and the  day after he left the camp was attacked and he died, so if he had not taken my grandfather's place i would never have been born. Next we went to the Jefferson memorial and that may have been the best memorial i saw all day because it is just stunning and his writings hanging on the wall for you to read was simply amazing.  Seth Green

Megan's Day in DC

Did you know that the Bell X1 was the first plane to travel faster than the speed of sound? 700 mph to be exact.

The Library of Congress is the most beautiful building I have ever seen. The details were absolutely flawless.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Momorial was really cool. The huge statue of Martin himself is completely perfect. It's amazing. His words were written on the walls and lit up. It was very nice.  - Maegan King
